It really started with a very interesting discourse of Osho that i read a year ago. I was never really curious of the predictive science and its technics really, even when my discussions with some of my close associations who were studying these technics usually ended up on this issue. But the very word astrology really did not appeal to me for some reason. Even today I shy using the word to define the techniq. This really has to d with the impresion that has been created on this issue. I searched dictionary.com on the word astrology and the results realy say why.
According to dictionary.com astrology means:
The study of the positions and aspects of celestial bodies in the belief that they have an influence on the course of natural earthly occurrences and human affairs.
Not a very flattering explanation really. As i have always argued, beliefs is a domain in which we can never be logical or unbaised. Logic has its limitations there.
The universe is really a lot of bodies, forces, energies in a dynamic state. Whether it is in balance or not is not really my reason behind this download. So will not digress.
A fish in a pond is very much under the influence of the watter surrounding it, the plants in the pond, the other organisms inside etc. Vise versa is equally true. Things outside the pond also influences the fish.
Now when is comes to the physical influences we can see that it is possible similarly for celestial bodies to infuence us. But how does it influence our intellect, creativity, matters of decisions, desires, fortune or misfortunes and such trivial issues oractivities of our everyday life. Even if we are to agree that they can influece, the real question is how can these be predictable.
Is intellect or consiousness a phenomenon that is beyond physical. If it is why does it need a physical being to sustain it. What if the consiousness is a universal phenomenon.
Many a times a lot of such rebutals are not really based on any facts but more as a side effect of some societal disorder. A lot of time a lot of people get a lot stressed due to some of the predictions or mere curiosity surrounding their own horoscopes. My friend calls this a 'Jathaka Prarabdha'.
But generally based on my own fact finding excersizes, I have found that it is very difficult to actually be able to master this technique. I have also found that most of the people who claim to know astrology are more dependant on intuition either knowingly or unknowingly, rather than on real rules. This is also bcos a lot of this knowledge has been lost.
It has been a tradition of our ancestors to pass down the knowledge through the Guru-shishya chain, than thro books. This is mostly inorder to avoid chances of this knowledge falling into unworthy hands which may misuse it. The very fact that this knowldge is very powerful demands a careful selection of the successor to whom it should be passed, very much like the way our governments/instituitions handle nuclear secrets. Thus even though there are instances where the serialized versions were created, they have been kept a real secret, and destroyed at the very hint of any threat.
The chain has been broken. There may be no real way to regain whats lost, and may be its for the good.
But there are books available like the Brihad Jathaka, Parashara Hora Shasthra, Garga Hora, Hora Sara and such. On reading these, I find them diluted, talking about the techniq at a very high level or in a very simplified way.
Some of the sections of the horoscope is very interesting. By looking at the horoscope atleast we can see a great deal of information captured. The varna, gana, vashya, naadi, yoni are the five most inportant characteristic based catogorization. We see that the varna which could be a brahmana, Kshthriya, vyshya or shudra, is applicable to any person born anywhere in the world belonging to any religion or culture. It mostly symbolizes the spiritual tendencies of the subject. Similarly the gana, which could be Deva, manushya or rakshasa, denotes the tempermental tendencies. Thus each of these denote a particular aspect of the personality of the subject.
